The 2022 HLPF will take place from 5 to 15 July, under the theme ‘Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development‘.

The following goals will be under review:

  • SDG 4 on quality education
  • SDG 5 on gender equality
  • SDG 14 on life below water
  • SDG 15 on life on land
  • SDG 17 on partnerships for the Goals

Position paper from the Scientific and Technological Community Major Group

Every year the Science and Technological Community Major Group (STC MG) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) compiles and submits a position paper on the theme of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF). The primary audiences for the position paper are UN Member States and their permanent missions. The position paper is included in the official documentation of the HLPF.

This year’s position paper seeks to bring together the latest scientific evidence and thinking from the Scientific and Technological community to set out ways to support the full implementation of the SDGs while building a sustainable recovery from COVID-19. The position paper therefore seeks to reflect on responses to the COVID-19 crisis, and how these can be better steered to both advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and end the pandemic.

The executive summary of the position paper is available here; it draws on a round of input received from several ISC Affiliated Bodies including Future Earth and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR).

A call for input into the 2022 HLPF S&T MG position paper closed on 27 April 2022. The drafting team are grateful for all inputs which are now being integrated into the position paper, which will be submitted to the UN by 28 May 2022. It will then be published on the UN website and the executive summary will be included in the HLPF official documentation.
