Prof. Walter O. Oyawa PhD
DIRECTOR GENERAL/CEO
Prof. Walter O. Oyawa, is currently the Director General of the National Commission for Science, Technology & Innovation (NACOSTI). He is a Professor of Civil Engineering, a holder of a PhD in Civil Engineering, and a holder of Executive MBA. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Lead Expert-NEMA and a reviewer of several international journals.
In addition to his current position as Director General of NACOSTI, Prof. Oyawa has served in various senior leadership/management positions including having been the Principal/CEO of Multimedia University College, Deputy Commission Secretary at the Commission for University Education (CUE), pioneering Ag. Principal of the College of Engineering & Technology at JKUAT, Director of a Research Centre-SMARTEC at JKUAT, Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at JKUAT, Board member of several boards, among others. He is endowed with vast experience in research/scholarly work, as evidenced by; extensive publications in peer reviewed journals, several awards and research grants, keynote lectures and conference papers, and supervision of numerous postgraduate students. His research interest is in the area of sustainable construction materials and technologies.
Dr. David Ngigi
Director, Advisory, Standards, and Licensing.
Dr. David Ngigi is a distinguished Entomologist with over 22 years of professional experience in both Public and Private Sectors. He is a known Champion for Science, Technology and Innovation in Kenya. He has served as the Head of the Institutional Registration and Accreditation Department at NACOSTI. In that capacity he has successfully spearheaded national initiatives towards attainment of aspirations of STI Act of 2013 that include mainstreaming STI in Government Agencies, strengthening research ethics oversight in the country, and facilitating the establishment of new research institutions.
Earlier, Dr. Ngigi successfully coordinated NACOSTI’s initiatives to operationalize the Government Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Fund that was set to intensify innovations and promote uptake of STI output in priority areas in line with Vision 2030 aspirations. Through his leadership the STI Fund grew to nurture and support over 1,800 research and Innovation projects, solidifying his commitment to propelling Kenya’s scientific landscape forward.
He was one of the pioneer members of the secretariat that was tasked to operationalize the current National Research Fund (NRF), the successor of the STI Fund. He made a significant contribution in supporting the Board of Trustees to set-up organization structures, build linkages and spearheaded resource mobilization to support research and Innovation in Government priority areas.
Mr. Gideon Kirui
Director, Corporate Services
Mr. Gideon K. Kirui is the Acting Director, Corporate Services at the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation of Kenya. He holds a Masters of Busines Administration degree, a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Accounting) and is a member of the Institute Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (ICPAK) and the Institute of Certified Secretaries. He has previously served in various public sector institutions in the areas of accounting, financial management and administration.
